Dillingham Borough, located in the southwestern part of the great state of Alaska, was named after U.S. Senator Paul Dillingham. The area was initially inhabited by Indigenous people, specifically the Yup'ik and the Dena'ina Athabascans, with the first Russian settlers arriving in the 19th century. Dillingham was officially incorporated as a city in 1963.

In 1881, the first American trading post in the nearby Nushagak River was established by E. W. Nelson of the Alaska Commercial Company. The arrival of this trading post attracted more people to the area, and during the late 19th and early 20th centuries, many significant events occurred. The building of the first cannery in Bristol Bay in 1883 led to rapid growth in the fishing industry.

Dillingham experienced a destructive influenza outbreak in 1919, often referred to as the Spanish Flu. This epidemic ravaged the local Native population, with approximately 40% of Alaskan Natives perishing during this tragic period.

Today, Dillingham Borough's economy is primarily based on fishing, with salmon being a significant industry product. Commercial fishing and fish-processing businesses create many job opportunities, and the region also attracts tourists and recreational fishermen.

Fun fact: Dillingham Borough claims the title of the "Walleye Capital of the World," attracting anglers from across the globe who are eager to catch massive walleyes that thrive in these Alaskan waters.
