Haines Borough, Alaska
.Haines Borough is located in the Southeastern region of the great state of Alaska. It was originally inhabited by the Tlingit, an indigenous people with a rich cultural history that dates back thousands of years. Haines Borough was formally incorporated in 1968, but its modern history began with the arrival of European settlers in the late 19th century.
In 1879, a U.S. Army survey expedition led by Lieutenant Frederick Schwatka named the area after one of its members, Francina Haines. The early settlers were attracted to the region mainly for its natural resources, including gold, timber, and fish. Haines became a significant hub during the Klondike Gold Rush (1896-1899) as it served as an overland route to the Yukon River, allowing prospectors to bypass the arduous Chilkoot Trail.
As the gold rush began to wane, Haines turned its focus to other industries, and a salmon cannery and sawmill were established. Additionally, Fort William H. Seward the first permanent military post in Alaska was established in 1902, which is now known as Fort Seward Historic District. Tourism started to play a significant role in the local economy in the 20th century, thanks to the area's scenic beauty and cultural attractions.
One fun fact about Haines Borough is that it's known as the "Valley of the Eagles." Every year, between October and December, the largest congregation of bald eagles in the world can be observed in the Alaska Chilkat Bald Eagle Preserve, with numbers reaching up to 4,000 eagles. This impressive gathering is due to the Chilkat River providing a late-season salmon run, attracting the majestic birds to the area.
