The Kenai Peninsula Borough, located in southcentral Alaska, is part of the great state that was purchased from Russia in 1867. The Borough was established on January 1, 1964, and its name, Kenai, is derived from the word "Kenaitze" which is the name of a local Alaskan Native tribe, the Dena'ina.

The Kenai Peninsula is rich in history, from Indigenous inhabitants to exploration by Russians and Europeans, and finally American settlement. The area has been populated by various Alaskan Native tribes for thousands of years. The Russians were the first Europeans to explore the region, and the influence of the Russian period can still be seen in several historical sites, such as the Holy Assumption of the Virgin Mary Russian Orthodox Church, which was built in 1894.

With the Alaska Purchase in 1867, the United States acquired the territory from Russia. In the following years, American and European settlers started moving into the peninsula, drawn by the abundant resources such as timber, fish, and minerals. The first salmon cannery on the Kenai Peninsula was built in 1882, marking the beginning of commercial fishing in the region.

One of the significant events in Kenai's history was the discovery of oil in the Swanson River region in 1957, leading to an oil boom and significant economic growth in the area. Today, the Kenai Peninsula is a popular tourist destination due to its beautiful and diverse natural landscapes, such as the Kenai Fjords National Park and the Katmai National Park and Preserve.

Fun fact: The Kenai Peninsula is home to the largest moose antlers ever recorded. These antlers were discovered in 1897 and measured a whopping 7 feet 9 inches (2.36 meters) in width.
