Ketchikan Gateway Borough is a borough located in the southeastern part of the great state of Alaska. Ketchikan, the borough's largest city and namesake, traces its origins back to the Tlingit native people, who lived in the area for thousands of years, utilizing the abundant natural resources, including cedar, salmon, and halibut. The indigenous community maintained their lifestyle through long-lasting, sustainable practices.

The modern town of Ketchikan was established in the late 1800s as a salmon fishing outpost and was incorporated in 1900. With the establishment of a United States post office in 1892, the settlement attracted miners and loggers, among other newcomers, during the latter half of that decade. In 1903, the Ketchikan Gateway Borough was officially recognized. The area's economy grew quickly and became heavily based on fishing, logging, and mining.

Ketchikan is known as "The Salmon Capital of the World" due to its strong ties to the fishing industry. Dotted with wooden buildings from the gold-rush era, Ketchikan is also home to the world's largest collection of standing totem poles, which can be found throughout the city and at the Totem Bight State Historic Park, reflecting its deep connections to Tlingit, Haida, and Tsimshian people.

As for a fun fact, Ketchikan has an interesting climate that is classified as "oceanic," which leads to mild winters and cool summers, but with one unique twist the city experiences a high amount of precipitation throughout the year, making it one of the wettest towns in the United States. In some years, Ketchikan has received more than 200 inches of rainfall!
