Kodiak Island Borough is located in the Gulf of Alaska and is part of the great state of Alaska. It includes the main Kodiak Island and several other smaller islands. The borough's history dates back to at least 7,500 years ago when the indigenous Alutiiq people settled on the island. Kodiak Island experienced its first contact with Europeans in 1763 when Russian explorer Stephan Glotov arrived. In 1784, Russian fur trader Grigory Shelikhov established a permanent settlement in the area, known as "Three Saints Harbor," which was the first white settlement in Alaska.

The Russian-American Company later took control of the settlement, and their trading activities significantly impacted the native Alutiiq population. In 1867, the United States purchased Alaska from Russia, and Kodiak Island became part of the US territory. In the early 20th century, the island was transformed by the industrialization of its fishing industry, particularly the development of the modern crab-fishing fleet.

Kodiak Island Borough was officially established on September 24, 1963, when local residents voted for its formation. Today, the borough is known for its rich history, stunning natural landscapes, and diverse wildlife. The primary industries of the region include commercial fishing, tourism, and government services.

One fun fact about Kodiak Island Borough is that it is home to the Kodiak National Wildlife Refuge, which covers nearly two-thirds of Kodiak Island. This refuge was established in 1941 to protect the unique Kodiak brown bear, the world's largest brown bear subspecies, and its natural habitat.
