The Lake and Peninsula Borough is located in the remote, southwestern region of the state of Alaska. It is the second largest borough in the state, with a population of just 2,153 people (according to the 2020 census) spread across a land area of over 43,000 square miles.

The majority of the population is Native American (primarily Yup'ik Eskimo) with a small percentage being White. The median household income is $41,375 and poverty rates are significantly higher than national averages. The largest employers in the area are primarily related to fishing and subsistence activities.

The living conditions in Lake and Peninsula Borough vary greatly depending on location. Many of the communities are small villages located along rivers or along the Bering Sea coast where access to basic services may be limited.
