Lake and Peninsula Borough is a region located in the southwestern part of the great state of Alaska. Established in 1989, it covers a sprawling area of approximately 32,922 square miles, making it one of the largest boroughs in Alaska by land area. The borough's population is relatively small, however, with the 2020 census recording close to 1,592 residents.

The region has a rich history involving the indigenous Alaskan people who have inhabited the area for thousands of years. The Alaska Native groups that have long called this region home include the Yup'ik, Alutiiq, and Sugpiaq. The area's abundant wildlife, lush vegetation, and fertile fishing grounds have traditionally supported the subsistence lifestyle of these native communities.

During the 18th and 19th centuries, Russian explorers and fur traders arrived in the area, followed by Americans after the United States purchased Alaska from Russia in 1867. The Lake and Peninsula Borough's modern economy is mainly supported by commercial fishing, tourism, and natural resource extraction.

A fun fact about this region is that it is home to Katmai National Park and Preserve, which is famous for its brown bear population and the Valley of Ten Thousand Smokes, a 40-square-mile area of volcanic ash and pumice created by the eruption of Novarupta Volcano in 1912. This eruption was one of the largest volcanic events of the 20th century and deposited ash as far away as Seattle, Washington.
