Nome Borough is located in the great state of Alaska, specifically in the Seward Peninsula area. The region was initially inhabited by the native Inupiat Eskimo people for thousands of years before it was discovered by Europeans in the mid-19th century. During the late 1800s, expansion into Alaska increased due to the search for gold, leading to the establishment of the Nome mining district in 1898.

Nome gained prominence in 1899 when the "Three Lucky Swedes" discovered gold in the Anvil Creek, resulting in a gold rush that attracted thousands of miners, entrepreneurs, and settlers. During this period, Nome rapidly grew as people established businesses, infrastructure, and a city government to support the booming population. At its peak, Nome was the largest city in Alaska, though it later experienced a decline in population when the gold resources dwindled.

Nome Borough was officially incorporated on January 1, 1961, when Alaska became a state. The borough has a rich cultural history due to the indigenous communities and early mining settlements across the region.

A fun fact about Nome is that it serves as the finish line for the Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race, a nearly 1,000-mile sled dog race held every year since 1973. The race commemorates the historic 1925 serum run, which involved a relay effort by dog sled teams to deliver diphtheria antitoxin from Anchorage to Nome to treat a deadly epidemic. The relay was led by mushers and their sled dogs, with the most famous being Leonhard Seppala and his lead dog, Balto.
