Sitka Borough, located in the great state of Alaska, is a place rich in history and cultural significance. Sitka's history dates back to thousands of years when the native Tlingit people settled in the region. The Tlingit community thrived thanks to the abundance of resources, such as salmon and other marine life, large Sitka spruce trees, and abundant wildlife in the surrounding forests.

European exploration of Sitka began in 1741 when the Russian explorer Vitus Bering led an expedition to map the Alaskan coast. In 1799, Russian-American Company, established by Tsar Paul I of Russia, started the settlement of New Archangel (Russian: -), which would later become Sitka. Under Russian rule, Sitka became the capital of Russian America and an important fur trade center.

The most significant event related to Sitka Borough's history is the Alaska Purchase, also known as "Seward's Folly," when the United States purchased Alaska from Russia for $7.2 million in 1867. The transfer ceremony occurred in Sitka on October 18, now known as Alaska Day. Sitka remained the capital of Alaska Territory until 1906 when it was moved to Juneau.

Today, Sitka Borough is a vibrant place known for its beautiful landscapes, pristine wilderness, and strong cultural heritage. With a population of about 8,493 residents, it is the largest city-borough in the United States by area covering 2,870.3 square miles.

Fun fact: Sitka is home to the Sitka National Historical Park, which commemorates the Tlingit and Russian history in the region. The park features Tlingit and Haida totem poles, restored Russian Bishop's House, and the site of the Battle of Sitka (1804) between Tlingit warriors and Russian forces the last major armed conflict between Native Alaskans and Europeans in the region.
