The Valdez-Cordova Borough is a rural borough located in the southeastern part of Alaska. It covers an area of nearly 25,000 square miles and its population is approximately 9,100 people. The majority of the population are descendants of the Ahtna Athabaskan people, but other ethnic groups such as Aleuts and Eskimos also call this area home.

The borough is a sparsely populated region with villages and towns scattered throughout its vast expanse. The main town of Valdez is the largest population center with a population of 4,000 people. The other two major towns are Cordova and Chitina, with populations of 2,200 and 1,000 people respectively.

Valdez-Cordova Borough has a largely subsistence lifestyle supported by fishing, trapping, hunting, berry-picking and gathering firewood. The harsh climate and extreme conditions makes it difficult to support commercial agriculture or industry. Despite these challenges, many residents remain self-sufficient by relying on their traditional knowledge of the land and its resources.

The living conditions in Valdez-Cordova Borough vary from one community to another. In general, housing is modest and often consists of one or two rooms with no running water or indoor plumbing. Many communities also lack basic amenities such as electricity, phone service, internet access, and roads.
