The Yukon-Koyukuk Borough, in the state of Alaska, is the largest borough in the United States by area, encompassing a whopping 147,805 square miles. It is situated in the central and western parts of Alaska and named after two significant rivers the Yukon River and the Koyukuk River. Even though it's such a large area, it has a relatively low population of approximately 5,230 residents as of the 2020 census.

Historically, the Yukon-Koyukuk region was inhabited by Alaska Native tribes such as the Athabascan people. The area was first explored by Europeans during the late 18th century and early 19th century when Russian fur traders began traversing the region. The United States acquired Alaska from Russia in 1867, and the region subsequently witnessed an increase in trading, mining, and missionary activities. In 1885, the establishment of Fort Yukon by the US military helped spur development in the region further.

The late 19th century was marked by a series of gold rush events, including the famous Klondike Gold Rush in 1896-99, which brought thousands of prospectors to the region, massively impacting both its economy and demography. While the Yukon-Koyukuk Borough was established in 1960, the region is mostly unorganized, with no borough seat or government the state of Alaska provides most of the municipal services.

As for a fun fact, the famed Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race, an annual long-distance sled dog race, crosses through the Yukon-Koyukuk Borough. This event commemorates an emergency mission to transport diphtheria antitoxin serum to the town of Nome in 1925, which helped prevent an epidemic. The Iditarod is considered one of the most physically challenging and grueling races, covering more than 1,000 miles and showcasing the perseverance of both the sled dogs and their mushers.
