Butler County, located in the great state of Alabama, was established on December 13, 1819, shortly after the state itself was admitted to the Union. Covering an area of about 777 square miles, Butler County is situated in the southeastern portion of the state and is part of the historic Black Belt region, which was famous for its dark, fertile soil and thriving cotton plantations during the 19th century.

The county was named in honor of Captain William Butler, a soldier from South Carolina who fought valiantly in the Creek War of 1813-1814. Greenville, the largest city and the county seat, was named after Nathaniel Greene, a Revolutionary War hero.

In its early years, Butler County's economy relied heavily on agriculture, primarily cotton cultivation, which was made possible by the fertile soil of the Black Belt Region. As time went on, the economy diversified into manufacturing, service industries, and forestry.

One fun fact about Butler County is that it played a significant role in Alabama's civil rights movement. In 1957, the Butler County Board of Education was a respondent to the United States Supreme Court case "Shuttlesworth v. Birmingham Board of Education", which dealt with discriminatory admission practices to state schools. The ruling of this case helped to improve racial equality and educational opportunities for African American students in Alabama.

Today, Butler County remains a charming testament to Alabama's history and heritage, with several historic and cultural sites to explore, such as the Greenville Historic District and the Old Butler County Courthouse.
