Lawrence County is located in the northwest corner of the great state of Alabama, and it was established on February 6, 1818. It was formed from land ceded to the federal government by the Cherokee and Chickasaw Indian tribes under the Treaty of 1816. The county was named in honor of Captain James Lawrence, a naval officer who gained fame during the War of 1812. The county seat is Moulton, named after Lieutenant Michael Moulton, who was killed in the War of 1812.

The area was initially home to various Native American tribes, including the Chickasaw and Cherokee. The Chickasaw called this area "home" before migrating west in the early 19th century. Lawrence County played a significant role in the early settlement of the state and the westward expansion of the United States.

During the Civil War, Lawrence County residents were divided in their loyalties, with many supporting the Union and others supporting the Confederacy. Courtland, a town in Lawrence County, hosted the North Alabama Conference, which aimed to seek peaceful resolutions to the ongoing conflicts between northern and southern states.

Agriculture has been an essential part of the county's economy since its founding, with cotton being the primary crop during the 19th and early 20th century. Today, Lawrence County has diversified its economy across various industries, including manufacturing, defense, and technology.
