Monroe County, located in the southwestern part of the great state of Alabama, was established on June 29, 1815. The county was named after the fifth President of the United States, James Monroe, who was also one of the founding fathers. Monroe County encompasses an area of roughly 1,032 square miles and currently has a population of approximately 21,000. The county seat is Monroeville, which is often referred to as the "Literary Capital of Alabama."

The area was initially inhabited by Native American tribes, including the Creek and the Choctaw. European settlers, mainly from the American colonies, began arriving in the 1800s. The county was primarily an agricultural community, with cotton as the main crop during the 19th century. The development of the railroad facilitated transportation and contributed to the growth of many small towns.

An interesting fun fact about Monroe County is its connection to the world of literature. Monroeville, the county seat, was the hometown of two renowned American authors: Harper Lee and Truman Capote. Harper Lee is best known for her Pulitzer Prize-winning novel "To Kill a Mockingbird", while Truman Capote gained fame for his novels "In Cold Blood" and "Breakfast at Tiffany's". Lee and Capote were lifelong friends and spent their childhood together in Monroeville. The Monroe County Courthouse, which inspired a setting in "To Kill a Mockingbird", has been turned into a museum dedicated to the literary heritage of the county.
