Pike County is located in the southeastern part of Alabama and was established on December 17, 1821. It was named in honor of General Zebulon Montgomery Pike, a famous explorer and soldier. The county seat, Troy, was originally called Deer Stand Hill before being renamed in 1838 after the famous city of Troy in ancient Greece.

In its early years, Pike County was mainly an agricultural region. Cotton, corn, and timber were the primary crops, and the county also had several lumber mills and cotton gins. The county experienced a steady population growth in the 19th and early 20th centuries, with the flourishing agriculture and industry attracting settlers.

The construction of the Conecuh River Railroad in the 1880s contributed to the county's economic development, as it connected the area with Montgomery, Alabama's capital city, and provided easier access to markets for trade.

The area has a rich educational and cultural history, with Troy University being founded in 1887. Troy University is one of Alabama's leading public institutions, attracting students from around the world.

One fun fact about Pike County is that it hosts the annual Peanut Butter Festival in the town of Brundidge. This unique event celebrates the area's agricultural heritage, particularly its peanut production, and includes a parade, live music, various food vendors, and, of course, plenty of peanut butter treats for all to enjoy!
