Randolph County is located in the east-central part of the great state of Alabama. It was established by the Alabama Legislature on December 18, 1832, and named in honor of John Randolph, a prominent Virginia congressman and senator during the early years of the United States. The county seat, Wedowee, was originally named Lafayette (in honor of the Marquis de Lafayette), but it was later changed to Wedowee, a word derived from a Creek Indian term which means "old water."

During the 19th and early 20th centuries, Randolph County's economy was predominantly based on agriculture, with cotton being the primary crop. The introduction of textile mills during the 20th century diversified the county's economy, providing jobs and increasing its population.

A fun fact about Randolph County is that it was home to the famous Creek Path, an ancient trading route used by the Creek Indians, which connected the Cherokee and Creek nations. This route later became part of the "Horseshoe Bend Campaign" a series of military maneuvers by General Andrew Jackson during the Creek War of 1813-1814. Today, U.S. Highway 431 closely follows this ancient pathway, serving as a reminder of the region's rich Native American heritage.
