Wilcox County, located in the great state of Alabama, was established on December 13, 1819. It was named after Lieutenant Joseph M. Wilcox, a young soldier from Connecticut who fought in the Creek War of 1813-1814 and later died under mysterious circumstances. The county is situated in the southwest part of Alabama and covers an area of approximately 888 square miles. Its county seat is the town of Camden.

Initially, the land was inhabited by various American Indian tribes, such as the Creeks and Choctaws. The arrival of European settlers in the 19th century led to land disputes with the indigenous people, culminating in the aforementioned Creek War. Following their defeat, the tribes were forced to cede large portions of their lands, paving the way for further European and American settlements in the area.

Wilcox County's economy primarily revolved around agriculture, with cotton being the dominant crop. The growth of cotton plantations relied heavily on enslaved labor. At the peak of the antebellum era, enslaved people made up more than two-thirds of the county's population. Consequently, Wilcox County became a center for the Civil Rights Movement and voting rights activism in the 1960s.

Today, Wilcox County offers a rich cultural experience, boasting various heritage sites and points of interest, such as the Roland Cooper State Park and the Old St. Mary's Church, which is one of the oldest Episcopal churches in Alabama.

Fun Fact: Each year, the city of Camden hosts the "Pine Hill Depot Day" festival, which celebrates the town's rich history with the railroad. The festival includes live music, food, arts and crafts, and other fun activities for visitors of all ages.
