Winston County, located in the great state of Alabama, possess a rich historical background. Established on February 12, 1850, the county was originally named Hancock County, in honor of John Hancock, an American statesman who played a significant role during the American Revolution. However, in 1858, the county was renamed Winston County in honor of John A. Winston, the first native-born Alabamian to become the state's governor (1853-1857).

Throughout the American Civil War, Winston County gained national attention for its strong support of the Union. Dubbed as the "Free State of Winston," the county took a staunch anti-slavery and anti-secession stance, with many of its citizens serving in the Union Army. In 1861, at Looney's Tavern in Winston County, secessionist leaders gathered and declared the county's opposition to the Confederate government. From this point on, Winston County firmly established a unique identity as an area of pro-Union sentiment in the heart of the Confederacy.

The county is home to breathtaking natural wonders, including the Bankhead National Forest and the Sipsey Wilderness Area. This region is steeped in Native American history, as the land was previously inhabited by the Muscogee (Creek) and the Chickasaw tribes.

A fun fact about Winston County is that the longest natural bridge east of the Rockies can be found here at the Natural Bridge Park. Spanning 60 feet (18 meters) across and standing 148 feet (45 meters) high, this sandstone and iron ore formation continues to draw tourists from all over the country.
