Clay County, located in the northeastern corner of the great state of Arkansas, was established on March 24, 1873. The county was formed out of parts of Randolph and Greene Counties, created in honor of the statesman Henry Clay, a prominent American lawyer, and Whig party leader. The county seat is shared between two cities, Piggott and Corning.

The county's geography encompasses fertile floodplains of running rivers, contributing to the prominence of farming and agriculture in the region, particularly in cotton and soybean cultivation. Additionally, the St. Francis and Cache rivers provide common waterways for transportation and recreation.

Clay County played a significant role during the Civil War, with the Battle of Chalk Bluff fought here in May 1863. The battle took place near the St. Francis River, with Confederate forces making a successful retreat across the river under heavy Union fire.

A fun fact about Clay County is that it is the home of the Hemingway-Pfeiffer Museum and Educational Center in Piggott. This was the family home of Ernest Hemingway's second wife, Pauline Pfeiffer. Hemingway completed significant portions of his famous novel, "A Farewell to Arms," during his visits to Piggott in the late 1920s and early 1930s. The site is now preserved as a museum and educational center for visitors to learn about Hemingway's life and works.
