Columbia County is located in the southwestern part of the great state of Arkansas. Established on December 17, 1852, it was named in honor of Christopher Columbus, the famed explorer. The county was formed from parts of Lafayette, Hempstead, and Ouachita counties. The county seat is Magnolia, and other important towns include Emerson, McNeil, and Taylor.

The early economy of Columbia County was primarily based on agriculture, particularly cotton farming, alongside the timber industry. The discovery of oil in the 1920s, particularly the Magnolia Oil Field, led to a period of rapid growth and economic boom in the region. The emergence of the petroleum industry shifted the focus of the region's economy, and today, the county is home to both an array of industries and a thriving agricultural sector.

Columbia County also played a significant role during the Civil War era. In the Battle of Elkin's Ferry, Union troops passed through the county in 1864 as part of a larger expedition that was ultimately unsuccessful. As a result, Confederate General John S. Marmaduke established his headquarters in Magnolia for a short time.

A fun fact about Columbia County is that it is home to the world's largest charcoal grill, which was built in 1957 by the former mayor of Emerson, W.R. Brookshier. Nicknamed "The Whopper," the grill measures approximately 18 feet long, 6 feet wide, and 5 feet deep. Every year, Emerson hosts the annual PurpleHull Pea Festival, where you can find The Whopper in action, grilling corn and sausage for attendees.
