Crittenden County is located in the northeastern part of Arkansas and was officially established on October 22, 1825. It was named in honor of Robert Crittenden, the Secretary of the Arkansas Territory, who played a significant role in the early development of the area. Having the Mississippi River along its eastern border, this county historically relied on agriculture and trade as its primary economic drivers.

The area was initially inhabited by Native American tribes such as the Quapaw and Chickasaw, who relied on the fertile land along the Mississippi. During the 19th century, the region experienced a rapid increase in its population, largely due to the expansion of the railroad and the growth of the cotton industry. The economy, however, took a downturn during the Great Depression, and the county experienced substantial poverty.

In more recent years, Crittenden County has regained its footing with an emphasis on infrastructure development and economic diversification. The construction of the Interstate 40, which connects Little Rock and Memphis, improved transportation and accessibility to the county.

A fun fact about Crittenden County is that it is home to the city of West Memphis, which is not only a major economic hub but also boasts an exciting greyhound racing track the Southland Casino Racing. This establishment, which opened in 1956, is one of the largest greyhound racing facilities in the country and attracts visitors looking for entertainment and gaming opportunities.
