Desha County is located in the southeastern part of Arkansas and was created on December 12, 1838. It was named after Benjamin Desha, an officer in the War of 1812 and a prominent landowner in the area. The county has an area of approximately 820 square miles, with 67 square miles being water. The county seat is the town of Arkansas City.

In the early 19th century, the region was primarily occupied by Native American tribes like the Quapaw and Cherokee, before becoming part of the United States with the Louisiana Purchase in 1803. The land was originally used for farming, with cotton becoming a significant crop in the 19th and 20th centuries due to the fertile soils in the Arkansas Delta region. The area was also characterized by the presence of plantations and a large enslaved African-American population before the Civil War.

Following the abolition of slavery after the Civil War, the economy of Desha County shifted towards sharecropping and tenant farming, although agriculture remained a crucial industry. The development of a railroad system in the late 19th and early 20th centuries further transformed the region's economy, as it allowed for easier transportation of goods, such as cotton and lumber, to other markets.

Today, the economy of Desha County is still largely reliant on agriculture, with major crops including soybeans, wheat, and rice. Other industries, such as manufacturing and healthcare, have also emerged as significant contributors to the local economy.

Fun fact: Desha County is known for being home to the Delta Heritage Trail State Park, a rails-to-trails conversion project that follows a former railroad corridor for 73 miles. This multi-use trail offers opportunities for hiking, biking, and wildlife viewing along a route that features a rich variety of natural landscapes and historical landmarks.
