Franklin County is located in the northwestern part of the great state of Arkansas. Formed on December 19, 1837, the county was named in honor of Benjamin Franklin, the eminent American statesman and a founding father of the United States. The county seat is divided between the towns of Charleston and Ozark, with designated courthouses in both locations, making it one of the few counties in the United States that has dual seats.

The area was initially inhabited by various Native American tribes, including the Osage, Caddo, and Quapaw. In the early 19th century, European-American settlers began to move westward, and Arkansas became a territory in 1819. When Arkansas achieved statehood in 1836, counties were created, including Franklin County.

During the Civil War, the region saw some skirmishes, but for the most part, it remained agriculturally focused. Due to its rich natural beauty, Franklin County boasts attractions like the Ozark National Forest and White Rock Wildlife Management Area. These locales offer visitors breathtaking views, camping, fishing, and various recreational activities, making Franklin County a prime destination for nature enthusiasts.

A fun fact about Franklin County is that it hosts the annual "Ozark Crawdad & Music Festival," which takes place on the first Saturday in October in the city of Ozark. The family-friendly event celebrates the county's heritage and culture with live music, food, arts & crafts, and, of course, crawfish in various forms.
