Hempstead County is situated in the southwestern part of the state of Arkansas and was established on December 15, 1818, as one of the original five counties created by the Missouri Territorial Legislature. The county was named after Edward Hempstead, a delegate to the U.S. Congress from the Missouri Territory, which included present-day Arkansas at the time. With origins in the early 19th century, Hempstead County is the oldest county in Arkansas.
The county seat is Hope, a city known for its large-scale cultivation of watermelons. The first courthouse was McCoy's Station, later renamed Washington, which served as the Arkansas Territory Capital from 1824 to 1836. Washington was also the site of the Confederate State Capital during the civil war. In 1939, a new county seat was established in Hope.
