Independence County, located in the great state of Arkansas, has a rich and storied history. The county was created on October 20, 1820, and named after the Declaration of Independence. Batesville, the county seat, is one of the oldest towns in the state and enjoys the distinction of being the oldest continuously settled city in Arkansas.

Independence County was initially inhabited by Native American tribes such as the Osage and Cherokee. The first Europeans to explore the region were the Spanish, followed by the French, who established a trading post in the area. In 1803, the United States acquired the land as part of the Louisiana Purchase.

The early economy of Independence County primarily revolved around agriculture, with landowners cultivating cash crops like tobacco and cotton. However, with the arrival of the Missouri and North Arkansas Railroad in the late 19th century, the local economy started to diversify, and industries related to timber, milling, and quarrying began to thrive.

Fun fact: Independence County has a unique geographical feature called "Pfeiffer's Ridge," which is a five-mile-long stretch of land that divides the White River from its backwater channel. This ridge was created thousands of years ago by ancient geological processes and makes for an interesting landmark in this beautiful region of Arkansas.
