Izard County, located in the great state of Arkansas, was created on October 27, 1825, as the state's 13th county. It was named in honor of George Izard, who served as the second Governor of Arkansas Territory from 1825 to 1828. The county seat of Izard County is Melbourne.
The county is situated in the northern part of Arkansas with the beautiful Ozark Mountains dominating much of the landscape. The White River, which flows through the county, played an essential role in the early development of the region, as it served as a critical transportation route for settlers and traders.
Early inhabitants of Izard County were Native Americans from the Quapaw, Caddo, and Osage tribes. European settlement began in the early 1800s, as families moved here to farm the fertile land. The county thrived on agriculture, particularly cotton and livestock, and later on, timber became a significant industry.
One fun fact about Izard County is that it is home to the "Brockwell Gospel Music School," founded in 1947 by Rufus W. Tyler. This school is an annual summer event that teaches individuals how to sing and play gospel music, preserving the southern gospel music tradition.
