Jefferson County is located in the great state of Arkansas and was established on November 2, 1829. Named after the third President of the United States, Thomas Jefferson, the county is situated in the southeastern region of the state. Its county seat and largest city is Pine Bluff, positioned on the Arkansas River.

Before European settlers arrived, the area was inhabited mainly by the Quapaw tribe. French explorers were the first Europeans to come to this region in the late 17th century, and the United States acquired the land through the Louisiana Purchase in 1803. During the 19th century, the area was primarily used for agriculture, specifically cotton farming. The fertile land with access to the river made this region ideal for farming.

During the Civil War, Jefferson County was a key location for the Confederacy, resulting in several skirmishes in and around the area. Following the war, the Reconstruction period involved a transition from a slave-based economy to a free labor society.

In the 20th century, the area saw significant industrial and economic growth, with the establishment of the Pine Bluff Arsenal as a major employer during World War II. As with many Southern counties, it was also an important center for the Civil Rights Movement.

One fun fact about Jefferson County is the presence of the Arkansas Entertainers Hall of Fame in Pine Bluff. This museum celebrates the achievements of famous Arkansans in the entertainment industry, including actors, musicians, athletes, and authors. Notable inductees include Johnny Cash, Maya Angelou, and John Grisham. The Hall of Fame is housed in a restored train depot, which reflects the historical significance of the railroad system in the region.
