Ouachita County, located in the south-central region of the great state of Arkansas, was established on November 29, 1842. The county was named after the Ouachita River, which flows through the area. The word "Ouachita" is of Native American origin, derived from the Choctaw language, and it means "the big hunt." The county seat is the city of Camden, which was once a thriving steamboat port along the river.

Before European settlement, the area was inhabited by the Caddo, Osage, and Quapaw indigenous tribes. French and Spanish explorers came to the region during the 16th and 17th centuries. In the early 1800s, the area saw an influx of settlers, mostly from the eastern United States, who established farms and plantations.

The economy of Ouachita County was historically based on cotton farming, which declined in the 20th century. The county later transitioned to a more diverse agricultural and industrial base. Logging, oil drilling, and manufacturing industries have played an important role in the economic development of the region.

Fun Fact: The area around Ouachita County is rich in naturally occurring mineral springs. These spring waters were believed to possess healing properties and attracted visitors from far and wide. The health resort town of Eureka Springs in the neighboring Carroll County was established in the late 1800s due to these mineral waters' popularity.
