Saint Francis County, located in the great state of Arkansas, was established on October 13, 1827. It was formed from lands that were previously part of the Arkansas and Phillips Counties. The county was named in honor of the Saint Francis River, which derived its name from the St. Francis Indians, a Native American tribe that resided in the area. The county seat is the city of Forrest City, which was named after General Nathan Bedford Forrest, a prominent Civil War Confederate general.

Agriculture has played a significant role in the history of Saint Francis County, with cotton being the primary crop. The rich farmlands and the St. Francis River helped support the development of the region's economy.

The history of Saint Francis County is also marked by its transportation significance. The railway system, specifically the construction of the Memphis and Little Rock Railroad in the 1850s, played a crucial role in the growth of the county's settlements.

One fun fact about Saint Francis County is the existence of the "Arkansas Tuberculosis Sanatorium," which was built in 1909 at the site of a natural spring known as 'Crowley's Ridge.' The sanatorium, now the site of the Forrest City Medical Center, was once the largest facility for the treatment of tuberculosis sufferers in the United States, attracting people from all over the country for treatments. The success of the sanatorium led to a decline in patients, and the facility eventually closed in 1973.
