Union County, located in the southern part of Arkansas, was established on November 2, 1829, from portions of Hempstead and Clark counties. The county is the largest in the state, covering over 1,000 square miles, and its county seat is the city of El Dorado. The area has developed around various industries over time, including timber, cotton, and oil.

The 1920s saw a major oil boom in Union County, which started in 1921 with the discovery of the Busey Well No. 1. After this discovery, El Dorado's population exploded overnight as people rushed to the area in pursuit of fortune. The county became one of the largest oil producers in the world during that period. At its peak, oil production from the Smackover oil field alone reached 69 million barrels per year, contributing significantly to Arkansas's overall development and prosperity.

A fun fact about Union County in Arkansas is that it is home to the Arkansas Museum of Natural Resources, which tells the story of the county's oil boom and includes a restored 1920s boomtown called "Oil Town" with historic buildings, exhibits, and artifacts.
