Woodruff County is located in the eastern-central part of Arkansas and was established on November 26, 1862. It is named after William E. Woodruff, the founder of the state's first newspaper, the Arkansas Gazette. The county seat is Augusta, and one of its major cities is McCrory.

Originally inhabited by Native American tribes such as the Quapaw, Osage, and Caddo, the region eventually saw European exploration and settlement. In the early 19th century, American settlers arrived in the region, many of them being farmers drawn to the fertile land along the White and Cache Rivers. The first major settlement within the boundaries of present-day Woodruff County was at Augusta, in 1848. The county was formed from parts of Jackson and St. Francis Counties during the Civil War.

Woodruff County's economy has largely been tied to agriculture, particularly cotton production. The area also developed sawmills, cotton gins, and grist mills during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The county has experienced economic challenges brought about by changing agricultural practices and natural disasters such as floods, but it remains an important part of Arkansas' agriculture and history.

A fun fact about Woodruff County is that it is home to the Augusta Historical Museum, which showcases artifacts and memorabilia related to the history of Augusta and Woodruff County. Among its exhibits, the museum features a collection of photographs of the area's historic buildings, equipment used in the county's agricultural industries, and displays on the nearby White and Cache Rivers.
