Gila County, located in the central part of Arizona, was officially founded on February 8, 1881. The county was named after the Gila River which served as an essential resource for the Native American tribes and early settlers. The region has a rich history, with evidence of the prehistoric Salado culture dating back to about 1150 AD. The Salado people left behind remarkable cliff dwellings and pottery artifacts in the Tonto National Monument area.

During the mid-19th century, the area witnessed an influx of European and American settlers due to the discovery of silver and copper, leading to the establishment of numerous mining towns, such as Globe, the current Gila County seat. The region also became accessible by railroad in the 1890s, which further propelled economic growth and settlement.

Gila County today is known for its diverse landscapes, including parts of the Tonto National Forest, the Mogollon Rim, and the San Carlos Indian Reservation. Its economy relies on mining, agriculture, and tourism.

A fun fact about Gila County is that the Pleasant Valley War, one of the deadliest conflict between cattlemen and sheepherders in American history, took place in the area from 1882 to 1892. The feud claimed around 35 lives and remains a significant event in the region's history.
