Graham County is located in the southeastern part of the state of Arizona and was created in 1881 from parts of Apache and Pima counties. The county was named after Mount Graham, the highest peak in the area, which in turn was named in honor of Lt. Colonel James Duncan Graham, a US Army officer, and astro-surveyor who was involved in mapping several parts of the United States.

The area has a rich history with native tribes, specifically the Apache people who inhabited the region long before the arrival of European settlers. Settlers came in the mid-19th century, primarily attracted by the mining industry, specifically gold and silver. Clifton and Morenci, which are now part of Greenlee County, used to be part of Graham County and were the main centers for mining activities.

The county seat, Safford, was founded in 1874 and has grown to become the economic hub of the area, with industries like agriculture, mining, and tourism playing a significant role. The Gila River runs through the county, providing water for farming and contributing to the lush landscape.

A fun fact about Graham County is that it is home to the largest diocese in Arizona, the Holy Trinity Monastery, established in 1974. It's a spiritual retreat center and a bird sanctuary, which attracts visitors from different parts of the country. In addition, the county is also known for the Coronado National Forest, a vast area of protected land with numerous recreational opportunities, such as hiking, camping, and viewing diverse wildlife.
