Greenlee County, located in the southeastern part of Arizona, was established on March 10, 1909. Named after Mason Greenlee, an early prospector and settler in the region, this county was formed from parts of Graham County by an act of the 25th Territorial Assembly. With its county seat in Clifton, Greenlee County has a rich history tied to its copper mining industry, which spurred the development of the region.

The region's history dates back as far as 2000 years ago when Native American tribes, including the Anasazi and Mogollon, inhabited the area. Spanish explorers arrived in the 16th century, and later, the area became part of Mexico until the 1848 Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo transferred it to the United States.

Prospectors began exploring Greenlee County in the second half of the 19th century, and in 1872, a team led by General George Stoneman discovered vast copper deposits near present-day Clifton. The mining industry attracted settlers to the area, leading to the establishment of towns such as Clifton, Duncan, and Morenci.

One fun fact about Greenlee County is that it is home to the Morenci Mine, the largest copper-producing mine in North America, and one of the largest open-pit mines in the world. The mine has been essential to the growth of the county and has been a significant contributor to Arizona's economy.
