Santa Cruz County, located in the southern part of Arizona, was established on March 15, 1899, making it the youngest county in Arizona. The county shares its border with Mexico to the south, Pima County to the west, and Cochise County to the east. The county seat and largest city is Nogales.

The name Santa Cruz originates from the Santa Cruz River, which flows through the region. The word "Santa Cruz" is Spanish for "Holy Cross." The region has a rich history that dates back thousands of years when it was inhabited by Native American tribes such as the Hohokam and Sobaipuri. Later, the area was explored and settled by Spanish missionaries and colonizers, who built several missions, including the famous Tumaccori, which still sits within the county's borders.

Santa Cruz County played a pivotal role during the Mexican-American War (1846-1848), which led to the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo and the Gadsden Purchase. Both of these historic events established the current border of Arizona and Mexico.

The arrival of the Southern Pacific Railroad in the 1880s contributed significantly to the economic growth of the area, expanding the mining industry and leading to increased settlement. During the late 19th century, copper, silver, and gold mining provided a major employment opportunity for residents. Agriculture also became more important as ranching and farming increased throughout the county.

Fun Fact: Santa Cruz County is considered the smallest county in Arizona by land area, as it spans 1,238 square miles. Despite its size, the region boasts of rich biodiversity and is home to several protected natural areas, such as Saguaro National Park, the Coronado National Forest, and the Tumaccori National Historical Park, which attract tourists and nature enthusiasts alike.
