Contra Costa County, located in the great state of California, is part of the San Francisco Bay Area and was established on February 18, 1850, as one of the 27 original counties of California. Its name translates to "opposite coast" in Spanish, referring to its position on the other side of the San Francisco Bay from the city of San Francisco.

Contra Costa County's early history is characterized by the California Gold Rush, which spurred rapid population growth and economic development in the area.
