Humboldt County, located in the northern part of California, was established on May 12, 1853. Its name comes from a German naturalist and explorer, Alexander von Humboldt, a prominent figure in the early 19th-century scientific exploration. The county's history is rich and fascinating, with stories dating back to Native American tribes like the Yurok, Hupa, and Karuk people who inhabited the area long before European settlers arrived.

The region witnessed a significant population growth during the California Gold Rush, which began in 1850. By 1855, the county saw an influx of settlers seeking fortune in gold mining, and small towns formed around the most prominent mining sites. The logging industry also boomed in Humboldt County in the late 19th century, with redwood forests fueling the expansion of timber production.

As a result, Humboldt County became a vibrant center for trade, with bustling ports along the Eel and Mad Rivers, and the establishment of the city, Eureka, as its county seat. The area continued to grow throughout the 20th century, with the establishment of Humboldt State University in Arcata in 1913 and the development of the fishing industry.

A fun fact about Humboldt County is that it is home to the renowned Redwood National and State Parks, covering nearly 50 percent of the remaining old-growth coast redwood forests in the world. These impressively tall trees can reach over 350 feet and live for more than 2,000 years. The parks are an international attraction and a UNESCO World Heritage site, showcasing the beauty and ecological significance of these ancient forests.
