Kern County, located in the southern Central Valley of the state of California, was founded on April 2, 1866. It was named in honor of Edward M. Kern, a topographer and artist who accompanied John C. Frmont's 1845 expedition. The county initially had an area of over 8,000 square miles but was later reduced after several boundary changes.

In the early years, Kern County was primarily inhabited by Native American tribes such as the Kawaiisu, Kitanemuk, and Yuawi. The first Europeans to explore the region were Spanish missionaries, followed by fur trappers, traders, and gold prospectors. The county saw significant growth and development during the California Gold Rush in the mid-19th century. Agriculture, too, thrived in Kern County's fertile soil, and its vast grasslands attracted cattle ranchers.

The economy of Kern County diversified with the discovery of oil in the late 19th century. The Kern River Oil Field, discovered in 1899, brought about an oil boom, making Kern County one of the most productive oil-producing regions in the United States. Today, the county's economy is driven by industries such as agriculture, oil production, and renewable energy sources, including wind and solar power.

A fun fact about Kern County is that it hosts the National Championship Indian Pow Wow, which is one of the largest Native American gatherings in the United States. This annual event celebrates Native American culture through traditional dances, music, food, and crafts.
