Madera County, located in the central region of the great state of California, was created on March 11, 1893. It was formed by carving out territory from the northern part of Mariposa County, an area rich in gold mining history. The county covers over 2,100 square miles, and its landscape features rivers, mountains, and forests.

The name "Madera" is derived from the Spanish word for lumber, which reflects the predominant industry in the region during its early years. While miners flocked to the area during the California Gold Rush, it was the logging industry that formed the basis of the economy. Madera County supplied lumber to the statewide market, including the construction of railroads, which significantly spurred its growth.

Yosemite National Park, one of the most famous and visited national parks in the United States, has its southern entrance located in Madera County. Established in 1890, the park occupies around 748,000 acres and is internationally recognized for its granite cliffs, waterfalls, clear streams, giant sequoia groves, and diverse flora and fauna.

A fun fact about Madera County is that it is home to the 'Fossil Discovery Center of Madera County,' a paleontological museum where visitors can learn about prehistoric life in the region. The site features a large collection of fossils unearthed from the Fairmead Landfill, which includes specimens of Columbian mammoths, saber-toothed cats, and giant ground sloths that once roamed this area during the Pleistocene epoch.
