Mariposa County is located in the western foothills of the Sierra Nevada mountain range in the great state of California. Established on February 18, 1850, it was one of the original 27 counties of California when the state joined the Union. The name "Mariposa" means "butterfly" in Spanish and was chosen by early Spanish explorers due to the large number of butterflies they encountered in the area.

Mariposa County has a rich history, particularly during the California Gold Rush era. In fact, it was within the county's boundaries where gold was first discovered in 1848 by James W. Marshall at Sutter's Mill, sparking the Gold Rush. As a result, Mariposa County became a major destination for those seeking their fortune in gold, and its population grew exponentially.

In addition to its gold mining history, Mariposa County is also known for its natural beauty. A significant part of the county lies within Yosemite National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, which was established in 1890. The park is home to iconic landscapes such as El Capitan, Half Dome, and Yosemite Falls.

Fun Fact: Mariposa County features the California State Mining and Mineral Museum, which houses an impressive collection of over 13,000 minerals, including the largest existing mass of crystalline gold - the Fricot "Nugget," weighing in at a whopping 201 ounces.
