Riverside County, California
.Riverside County, located in the southern part of California, was formed on May 9, 1893, after being partitioned from San Bernardino County and San Diego County. Covering an area of 7,303 square miles, Riverside County is the 4th largest of California's 58 counties. The county is named after the city of Riverside, which sits on the banks of the Santa Ana River.
The region was first inhabited by Native American tribes, such as the Cahuilla, Serrano, and Chemehuevi, who relied on the rivers, lakes, and fertile soil to support their communities for thousands of years. The Spanish arrived in the late 18th century and established the nearby San Gabriel Mission in 1771. After Mexico won independence from Spain in 1821, Mexican land grants were given to local residents, creating large ranches and agricultural centers.
In 1850, California became part of the United States, and Riverside County was eventually established in 1893. The late 19th century saw an economic boom, largely because of the introduction of navel orange trees by Eliza Tibbets in 1873. Riverside quickly became the epicenter of the citrus industry in Southern California, drawing more people to the area.
Growth continued with the creation of the University of California, Riverside in 1954, and the arrival of numerous aerospace and military industries during the Cold War era. Today, Riverside County comprises a diverse population and provides opportunities in various industries, including agriculture, manufacturing, and technology.
