Santa Cruz County, located on the central coast of California, has a rich and diverse history that dates back thousands of years. The region was first inhabited by the Ohlone Native American tribe, who established numerous villages along the fertile valleys, beautiful coastlines, and lush forests.

Spanish explorer Gaspar de Portol discovered the area in 1769 as part of his expedition along the California coast. In 1791, the Spanish established the Mission Santa Cruz, the twelfth Spanish mission built in California. The mission was an integral part of the Alta California missionary system aimed at converting and integrating native populations into Spanish colonial society.

Following Mexican independence from Spain in 1821, the California missions were secularized. Santa Cruz County was created in 1850 as one of the original counties of the newly-formed state of California. The region saw rapid development in agriculture, logging, and mining, driven by the arrival of American settlers and later the Chinese immigrants, who contributed significantly to the local economy.

The late 19th and early 20th centuries saw the growth of Santa Cruz as a popular seaside resort town, attracting numerous visitors from the San Francisco Bay Area. The Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk, one of the oldest amusement parks in the United States, opened in 1907 and remains a popular attraction today.

A fun fact about Santa Cruz County is that it is home to the Mystery Spot, a popular tourist attraction based on the concept of a gravitational anomaly. Opened in 1940, this site has captured the imagination of visitors with its unusual demonstrations of apparent defiance of gravity, and it remains a favorite destination for people seeking an entertaining and puzzling experience.
