Siskiyou County, located in the northernmost region of California, was established on March 22, 1852. The county's name is derived from the Native American word "Siskiyou," which means "bob-tailed horse". Covering an area of 6,347 square miles, Siskiyou County features a diverse landscape that includes forests, mountains, valleys, rivers, and lakes.

The region has a rich history that spans thousands of years, having been home to several Native American tribes such as the Shasta, Modoc, and Klamath people. In the early 19th century, Europeans began to explore the area, with trappers, traders, and settlers making their way through the area on the Siskiyou Trail, a historic pathway that connected California's Central Valley with Oregon's Rogue Valley.

The California Gold Rush of the mid-19th century brought a significant influx of miners and settlers to Siskiyou County, leading to the establishment of several new towns, including Yreka, the county seat. The area became famous for its mines, which included the Greenhorn, Humbug, and Scott Bar mines.

As the gold rush subsided, the county shifted its focus to agriculture, timber, and livestock, with cattle and sheep ranchers playing a crucial role in the local economy. Today, Siskiyou County is known for its outdoor recreational opportunities and its stunning natural beauty, drawing visitors who come to explore the natural wonders of Mt. Shasta, the Marble Mountains, and the various national forests that blanket the region.

Fun fact: Siskiyou County was the location of the last stagecoach robbery in the United States. On June 9, 1916, the "Black Bart" gang held up the Yreka-to-Fort Jones stagecoach before making off with about $160 in gold coins.
