Solano County is situated in the northeastern part of the San Francisco Bay Area in the great state of California. The county was officially established in 1850, soon after California achieved statehood. Covering approximately 909 square miles, it lies between the San Francisco Bay and the Sacramento Valley. Solano County has a diverse population, with key cities including Vallejo, Fairfield (which serves as the county seat), Vacaville, and Benicia.
The region's history can be traced back to the Indigenous Patwin people, who were part of the larger Wintun tribe of Northern California. The Spanish first explored the area in the early 18th century as part of their colonization of California. The Mexican government granted land to military servicemen and settlers after gaining independence from Spain in 1821.
One of the most notable early settlers was General Mariano Guadalupe Vallejo, who founded the neighboring Sonoma pueblo and helped shape the political landscape of early California. His brother, Salvador Vallejo, established a ranch in the region that eventually became the city of Vallejo, named in Mariano's honor. In 1851, Benicia became the official state capital of California for a brief period before it moved to Sacramento.
Agriculture has played a significant role in the county's economy throughout its history. The fertile soil and abundant water supply supported a variety of crops, while the Gold Rush of 1849 welcomed an influx of settlers and attracted farmers from around the globe to the region. To this day, Solano County remains a key agricultural center.
