Baca County, situated in the southeastern part of Colorado, is rich in historical and cultural heritage. Established on April 16, 1889, the county was named in honor of pioneer and Colorado territorial legislator Felipe Baca, who played a significant role in the early settlement of the region.

Before European exploration, this area was home to Native American tribes, including the Ute, Comanche, and Apache. As part of the Louisiana Purchase in 1803, the region came under U.S. control, followed by the establishment of the Colorado Territory in 1861.

In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Baca County's economy primarily relied on agriculture, thanks to the introduction of large-scale, dry-land farming techniques. The community flourished, and towns like Springfield, Walsh, and Campo emerged as centers of trade and commerce.

Unfortunately, the county suffered from the Great Depression and the Dust Bowl in the 1930s, which led to a decline in population as people left to seek other opportunities. Despite this setback, Baca County remains rooted in agriculture, with cattle, wheat, and other crops still being cultivated. Today, the county is also known for its wildlife refuges, prairie landscapes, and rich Americana heritage.

Fun Fact: Baca County, Colorado, was home to a WWII Prisoner of War (POW) camp near the town of Springfield. The camp held German and Italian prisoners, and many of these POWs actually assisted local farmers with labor during their internment, helping to boost the regional agricultural industry.
