Conejos County, situated in the great state of Colorado, has a rich historical background that dates back thousands of years when indigenous groups such as the Ute people inhabited the region. In the mid-19th century, the area saw an influx of people of European descent, including Hispano settlers who established the community of Tierra Amarilla in 1845, which later became known as Conejos.

Conejos County was officially created on November 1, 1861, as one of the original 17 counties of the Colorado Territory, although it has undergone several boundary changes since then. The county was named "Conejos," meaning rabbits in Spanish, due to the abundance of rabbits in the region.

The San Luis Valley, where Conejos County lies, is home to numerous natural wonders and historical sites. One such site is the Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad, which was completed in 1880 and is the longest and highest steam railroad in the United States. The railroad, also a National Historic Landmark, traverses 64 miles through the scenic landscapes of Conejos County and northern New Mexico, showcasing the spectacular engineering feats of the late 19th century.

A fun fact about Conejos County is that it contains the oldest church in Colorado, Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church, which was established in 1857 in the town of Conejos. The church stands as a testament to the deep-rooted Hispano culture in the region and is still active today, hosting regular services and community events.
