Costilla County is located in the San Luis Valley of the great state of Colorado. Established on November 1, 1861, it holds the distinction of being the first county in Colorado. The county is named after the Rio Costilla, a tributary of the Rio Grande river that runs through it. Costilla County covers a total area of 1,230 square miles and has a population of approximately 3,600 people.

The history of Costilla County can be traced back to the early settlement of the San Luis Valley, which began in the mid-1800s when Hispanic settlers from New Mexico arrived in the area. The town of San Luis, which is the county seat, was established in 1851, making it the oldest town in the state of Colorado. The heritage of Hispanic culture and traditions remains an essential element of the area to this day.

One fun fact about Costilla County is the presence of the Culebra Range, a subrange of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains, which features Culebra Peak. Culebra Peak is the only peak over 14,000 feet in elevation in the United States that is privately owned. Historically, the mountain was part of the Sangre de Cristo Land Grant, a large land grant given by the Mexican government in 1844 to extend agriculture and settlement in the region. Today, it remains under private ownership but allows limited access for hikers and mountaineers with prior permission.
