.Elbert County, Colorado was formed on February 2nd, 1874, named after Samuel Hitt Elbert, who was the Governor of the Colorado Territory from 1873 to 1874. The county originally covered a larger area, but it was reduced in size when Lincoln, Kit Carson, and Washington counties were established out of its territory in 1889.
The region has a rich history dating back thousands of years, as the area was once inhabited by Native American tribes such as the Utes and Arapaho. As the pioneers moved westward during the 1800s, Elbert County became home to cattle ranchers and farmers, with its fertile soil attracting different communities, including German-Russians, Irish, and Swedish immigrants. The town of Elizabeth, established in 1855, was one of Colorado's earliest settlements, serving as a stagecoach stop between Denver and the Rocky Mountains.
In the early 20th century, Elbert County saw a growth in infrastructure and transportation with the building of railroads, highways, and schools. Today, the county is predominantly rural with agriculture and ranching being the major economic drivers, and it is part of the Denver-Aurora Metropolitan Area.
