Huerfano County, located in the great state of Colorado, has a rich and storied history. Founded on November 1, 1861, the name Huerfano comes from the Spanish word "hurfano," meaning orphan. This name was inspired by the singular volcanic butte near Walsenburg, known as "Huerfano Butte" or "the orphan," which is a striking local landmark.

Prior to its establishment as a county, the Huerfano River valley housed a number of indigenous tribes, including the Ute and the Comanche. In the early 19th century, the area started to see an influx of fur trappers, traders, and explorers. After the Mexican-American War, the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo in 1848 brought the region under United States control.

Huerfano County's rich coal reserves played a significant role in its history, attracting miners and leading to the rapid expansion in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The town of Walsenburg, the county seat, was officially incorporated in 1873, named in honor of Fred Walsen, a Danish businessman who established a trading post in the area.

Unfortunately, a series of tragic mining accidents and labor conflicts in the early 20th century had a profound impact on the local mining industry, leading to a significant reduction in population and economic activity throughout the county. In recent times, however, Huerfano County has embraced a focus on renewable energy, agriculture, and tourism.

A fun fact about Huerfano County is the existence of various geological and historical sites, such as the Lathrop State Park, established in 1962 as Colorado's first state park. The park encompasses two lakes and provides visitors with a range of outdoor recreational opportunities, including boating, fishing, hiking, and wildlife viewing.
