Kiowa County is located in the southeastern part of Colorado and was established in 1889. It was named after the Kiowa Native American tribe that once inhabited the area. The county encompasses an area of approximately 1,786 square miles and has a population of just over 1,300 residents as of 2020.

Historically, Kiowa County was a part of the larger Bent County, which was later divided into several smaller counties including Cheyenne, Otero, and Prowers. The area was primarily used as hunting grounds by the Kiowa and other Plains Indian tribes. In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Kiowa County was settled by pioneers attracted to its fertile land for agriculture and ranching activities. As railroad lines expanded through southeastern Colorado, towns like Eads, Arlington, and Sheridan Lake were established and quickly grew in population.

The Dust Bowl era of the 1930s had a significant impact on Kiowa County, with severe droughts and storms affecting agricultural production and prompting many farmers to migrate to find better opportunities elsewhere. However, agriculture continues to play a vital role in the county's economy and identity. Now, it's an integral part of the state's agricultural industry, with wheat, corn, and cattle as some of its primary products.

A fun fact about Kiowa County is the presence of the impressive Sand Creek Massacre National Historic Site, located within the county's boundaries. This site commemorates the tragic events that occurred on November 29, 1864, when a 700-man force of the Colorado Territory militia attacked and destroyed a peaceful village of Cheyenne and Arapaho Native Americans, ultimately killing around 150 people, mostly women, children, and elderly. Today, the site serves as a stark reminder of this heartbreaking chapter in American history and plays a significant role in Native American heritage preservation.
